Why are times tables so important?

Learning and memorising times table by heart is very important for a strong maths foundation. As children memorise all the times table, they can solve complex math problems quickly and become more fluent in their mental arithmetic. Being fluent in times table help children in their other key math concepts like addition, subtraction, division and long multiplication problems.

Mastering times table gives confidence to children in their everyday life too. For example, if you have seven 5p coins in your piggy bank. The quickest way to find out how much money you have is to times 5 by 7. Just do 5×7=30 and you will know that you have 30p in your piggy bank.

How can I practice my times table at home?

Make memorising times table fun for your child so they can learn more quickly and perform better in their maths lessons in school. There are 6 best ways to help your child practice their times table at home.

Use flashcards to play different fun games.
Use sticky notes to write the multiples of times table you are looking to practice. Ask your child to collect the sticky notes and put them in order.
Some children are visual learners. Stick the multiplication chart where they can see them daily. It will also help them to memorise the times table.
Multiplication Times table songs on YouTube.
Recite Times tables in different voice styles. For example robot voice, posh voice etc
Online Times games like Hit the button, would also give good practice to the children
Bang Bang! is a fun game that two children can play together. Let children sit back to back, and the parent, says a timetable. The first to turn around to the partner and say answer with a “Bang Bang” after wins!

Teaching days of the week is one of the most important topic taught in Early Years. As soon as your child turns 3 or 4 they are ready to learn “Days of the week”. It can be tricky at the start as they don’t understand the concept of time. But once they are ready it’s only the memorization. By using flashcards, songs and other fun activities your child will learn days of the week in no time.

Our wonderful flashcards are perfect for practising “Days of the week” first thing in the morning. Young children will love colourful and easier to read cards. 5 Activities to teach “Days of the Week” in a fun way:

1. Sing child’s favourite days of the week song while pointing at the card correct card on the wall. It is a great way to reinforce the learning.

2. Give your child jumbled up flashcards. Ask them to put them in order of the days of the week.

3. Ask your child daily what day is it? Point to the correct card. Practice the letters of the word together. This activity will help them with their spelling and letter recognition.

4. Give them the Days of the week worksheet with no colours just the outline. Allow the child to colour in the letters and become familiar with spelling.

5. This is the perfect time to teach them the concept of today, tomorrow and yesterday. Pick up your calendar and ask your child what day is today? then show your child, what day was yesterday? And what day will be tomorrow? Reinforce this lesson by asking them questions like what you did yesterday? What are you planning to do tomorrow?
