Year 2 Year 3

A simple way to find half of the large number in year 2

Hi! Hope everyone is having a fantastic Friday. Today, one mummy contacted me and asked a wonderful question. She wanted to know “How to teach year 2 children finding half of larger numbers?” So, I did a quick search and couldn’t find any useful topic that can answer her question. Finally, I thought I will quickly write an article to help her.

Finding half of the large number by partitioning.

During year 1 and year 2 children learn double and half of the numbers up to 20. They memorise it so, most of the time we can expect them to calculate halves rather quickly

Example: 1/2 of 12 = 6

But, what if I ask them to find half of 46. Year 2 children might find it tough to calculate it.

The best practice to teach this to children is by partitioning.  Let’s look at the example below.
