5. Cyberchase

1. Martha Speaks

Martha Speaks is based on children book by Susan Meddaugh’s. In this show, a family dog ate a magical alphabet soup which gives him the ability to speak. The show teaches young watchers vocabulary and synonyms in a fun and eye-catching way. Watch on prime video today!

Wallykazam is a fun animated Tv show for pre-schoolers created on the adventures on 6-year-old troll named Wally troll man. Wally has the powers to make words come to life with his magic wand but sometimes the adventures do go wrong so wally has to be very careful. The show teaches children how to sound out words, letter-sound association and spellings.

3. Alphablocks

SCIENCE

1. Sid the science kid

Sid the Science kid is an award-winning television program by PBS Kids. A young boy named Sid constantly looks for answers in the field of science. The program is fun and enjoyable for kids as it has plenty of comedy and music.

2. The cat in the hat knows all about that

The Cat in the hat knows nearly everything. Cat takes his youngster friends Nick and Sally on educational adventures in his amazing car Thinga-ma-jigger where they learn about natural science. The show is planned to inspire children’s literacy in science. The TV show is available on Netflix.

3. Magic school bus:

This hit animated tv series features Ms Frizzle’s Magic school bus that turns into a spaceship, a submarine, a blimp, and more to travel outer space, under the sea and even inside the human body. Get ready for the amazing adventure where children will learn about bugs, sea creatures, the solar system, bacteria, the human body and much more!

4. The Dr. Binocs show

While reading a book looking for an unfamiliar word in the dictionary can be a difficult task for children.  Encouraging children to use a dictionary on their own can help your child become a more avid and independent reader.

My daughter loves reading, it’s her normal routine to pick a book and start reading whenever she finds the time. Every time she came across a new word while reading she rushed to me to know the meaning. We used to search the word on my mobile phone or in the paper dictionary.

The two problems I faced were :

1. As soon as she had my mobile phone in her hand she always got distracted and leaves the book aside.
2. Finding words from paper dictionary was too time-consuming and she got fed up with this.

So, I did a bit of research and came across this Electronic Bookmark Dictionary. The dictionary comes in three different colours(pink, white and grey). It’s ultra-thin and fits perfectly inside a paperback book as a normal bookmark. The innovation is simple and amazing.

The dictionary is having all 38,000 word’s definitions fed inside. It has won well deserved the gift of the year 2011.

You simply enter the word you want to search and press “OK”. The dictionary tells you if the word is a noun(n), verb(v) or adjective(a) and if you scroll down you will learn meanings. It’s just so simple.  Now my daughter doesn’t have to get up and find for her dictionary. She just quickly searches the word. The dictionary is child-friendly and extremely easy to use which makes looking up words and translation a breeze.

I would say it’s a superb choice for independent readers who can now search the meanings of tough words all by themselves.

Let’s compare (Comparative vocabulary)

Let’s Compare is a brilliant comparison game which focuses on teaching how to compare different objects with vocabulary like biggest, smallest, shortest, longest and tallest. In this game, children compare the sizes of objects and animals. This game is tablet friendly.

Teddy Numbers (Teaching numbers to 15)

Another superb game by TopMarks, the game focus on teaching numbers but this is up to 15. Learn the digits and words for the numbers. This game is tablet friendly.

Toy Shop Money (Coins)

The game focus on one of the most challenging topic for reception children that is Money. There are two game modes; the first where children use coins to make up varying amounts to buy the toys and the second where they work out change. Start with the easiest level for your little one. This game is tablet friendly.

Ten Frame (Number bonds to 10)

A simple yet effective game to teach number bonds to 10. The game shows a grid of 10 spaces which are filled with counters (or stars, apples or ladybirds) and children are asked either to count the objects available or count how many spaces are still empty? This game is tablet friendly.

The aim of this game is to practice quick retell of number facts up to 9 + 9. This game is not tablet friendly.

Shapes Shoot (2D and 3D shapes)

Most children find hard to learn the names of 2D and 3D shapes. Not to worry, This game comes as a life saver. This gives really good practice to children for 2D to 3D. This game is not tablet friendly.

Subtraction harvest (Subtraction)

A wonderful subtraction game that helps children to master takeaways with pictures. My son really enjoyed it so do give it a go. This game is not tablet friendly.

Balloon pop skip (Skip counting in 2’s and 5’s)

A brilliant game by Sheppard software that takes the hassle out of teaching skip counting to children. It helps children to count in 2s, 5s and 10s. This game is not tablet friendly.

This game focus on patterns. Look out for the shapes, colours and letters to carry on the sequence. This game is not tablet friendly.

I have made words mat along with flashcards to help teach children in a fun way.Print the flashcards, laminate them and cut them. They are great to practice with children every day. I also recommend asking the children to make sentences of these words. I hope it will benefit you all.

what are common exception words?

As soon as children start to read in school, they start to learn common exception words as well. Common exception words are the tricky words to read. they normal phonics system does not apply to them. The exception words do come very frequently in English so they are taught from very early age. As the child progresses in school they learn tougher words. It is always good to practice these words regularly at home as it helps children to improve their reading speed and spellings.

A few weeks back when in school my son who is in reception started learning the topic of Telling Time, I head over to Argos to find something that can help him a little more to understand this tricky topic. That’s the day when I found this True Gem. It not only helped my little son but also by a daughter who is currently in year 3.

The clock is well made with a beautiful red apple shape. The clock features a bee button, a quiz button and the moving minute hand and hour hand. The bee button tells you the time that is on the clock with this functionality my son learned o clock and half-past in no time. My son repeat the time as he hears the clock telling him time. The toy is brilliant at stimulating your child’s brain and practising numbers.

The quiz button is just superb as it tests children knowledge. As the child presses the quiz button it asks children to tell the specific number. I turn the clock on quiz mode and give it to my daughter every night as she practices her time telling skills.

In the end, I loved this clock and highly recommend you to buy this. It is well worth every penny and your child will surely gain time telling knowledge with it.
