Subtraction to 5:

The lovely worksheet is perfect for starting teaching subtraction to early years and reception students. The worksheet has two tasks, the first one is count and subtract, and the second one is subtraction using fingers.

Subtraction to 10:

This fun subtraction worksheet will encourage Year 1 students to subtract using the ten-frame. The children have to count the stars and then cross out the numbers of stars they are subtracting. What are homophones?

Homophones are the words that sound same but have different spelling and different meanings. This means that chances are high that the children will mix up some of the words at some point in their reading and writing.

Example:

• Night (The time from dusk to dawn when no sunlight is visible)
• Knight (A man who is given a rank of honour by a British king or queen because of his special achievement)

Why is it important to learn homophones?

Teaching homophones widen children vocabulary, enhance their comprehending skills and help them in spelling. Homophones are very important for children to learn properly and remember them. What happens if you use homophones wrong? You could end up having sentences that don’t make any sense.

Which homophones are taught in Year 2?

Year 2 children have to learn a list of homophones under the national curriculum. These are the spelling your Year 2 children have to learn to meet her national curriculum guidelines.

What is a Bar Model?

Bar model is a way to draw problems with visual representation. It helps students to achieve mastery in Maths in all operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. As children move to Upper KS2 it hugely benefits children to solve more complex problems by visualizing them.

The bar modelling is actually taken from Singapore mastery textbook that follows the approach of concrete — pictorial — abstract (CPA). In this approach the children are given the actual objects like cubes, Numicons or other manipulative to start with, then move to drawing boxes and finally they don’t need any objects to solve the problem.

Example:

Tom has 20 sweets and shares some of them with his sister Sara. He gives Sara 5. How many does he have left?

In early years, children will solve this problem using real objects.

Once children can do this themselves the next stage is to replace the ‘real’ objects with objects like cubes, button, counters or other manipulative.

The final step of this is where children represent the quantities in a rectangle bar which children should be able to do by the end of year 2.

What are the benefits of using the bar model?

Bar modelling helps children to understand math better by visualizing and making sense of the problems, so children can move towards more abstract calculations. This intuitive method makes children more confident in their operations needed to solve problems. The bar model not only helps in addition and subtraction, it applies in almost all areas of math.

It is versatile and simple to use as children don’t need anything to use it except pencil and paper.

As an added bonus, at the end of the book, there are some really good maths activities that parents can do with their children. The maths activities range from teaching place value, addition, subtraction and grouping.

As soon as children start to read in school, they start to learn common exception words as well. Common exception words are the tricky words to read. they normal phonics system does not apply to them. The exception words do come very frequently in English so they are taught from very early age. As the child progresses in school they learn tougher words. It is always good to practice these words regularly at home as it helps children to improve their reading speed and spellings.

What is perimeter

The perimeter is the distance around a 2D shape… You can imagine it as an ant crawling around the shape, so the area the ant will cover is the perimeter of that shape. The perimeter is normally measured in cm but can also be measured in mm and meters

you can calculate perimeter by adding the length of all the sides of the shape

Example 1:

Let’s calculate the perimeter of this shape. There are two ways to do it.

1. Adding all the sides: 4+4+4+4=16
2. Multiplying: instead of adding all the sides you can do it as 4×4=16 which is quite simple and quick.

3 steps to teach perimeter to kids

• First, show this video to your kids. Once it’s done ask kids what they think the perimeter is.

• To get a better picture if your kids have understood the idea give them these worksheets to work on. It will help them gain more confidence in this topic. So grab your rulers and start solving the problem

The exclamation sentences are those sentences which are used to show strong feelings,  these sentences normally end with an exclamation mark. The exclamation sentences are also known as exclamatory sentences. these sentences are normally made up of What and how like

Examples of exclamation sentences.

Here are some examples of exclamatory sentences:

• What a beautiful day! (Expresses happiness)
• How amazing this car is ! (Expresses surprise)
• What a stupid boy you are, Jack! (Expresses anger)
• What a tricky question this is! (Expresses frustration)
• What an evil witch she was! (Expresses Fear)

How to make exclamatory sentences:

The exclamatory sentences in standard English need to begin with What or how. The sentence must contain a verb and ends at an exclamation mark. Another rule you must remember in writing an exclamatory sentence is…

If the noun in your sentence is plural then your best choice is to start a sentence with What instead of How.

Example:-

• What hardworking children these are! (Correct)
• How hardworking children these are! (Incorrect)
• What can also be used in singular form? (What a hardworking child he is!).
