How does “100 squares” grid help children in their maths?

The 100 square is a wonderful resource to help children learn numbers from the start. The hundred square will help children investigate how to find multiples of numbers, how even or odd numbers are situated across the grid, how to count on and backwards from a number and much more. Activities to do with Hundred Square:

We have made a list of some activities that your children will love to play.

1. Let children learn their timetables by skipping counting and colouring the squares. This activity will also help children visualize their timetable and thus aiding their learning process.
2. Cut the number grid into puzzle pieces now let children put the puzzle pieces back together and see who is the fastest.
3. Cut all the numbers separately, ask children to put them in a pattern of 2s, 5s or 10s.
4. Ask someone older than you to play the teacher: pupil game with you. The teacher says to put the counter on the number that is 1 more or less than a given number. If you get the answer right, you get a point. If you get the answer wrong, the teacher (your partner) gets the point. The winner is the person with the most points after 5 minutes!

What is a place value in maths?

Place value helps us identify the worth of each digit. We use it to understand if the value or worth of a digit is thousands, hundreds, tens or ones.

For instance, in 5426 the “5” is 5000, “4” is 400, “2” is 200 and “6” is ones.

What do children need to know about Place value in Year 1?

According to the national curriculum, Year 1 children are expected to:

1. Count and read numbers from 0 to 100.
2. More than, less than and equals to
3. Count in 2s, 5s and 10s
4.  Identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations like numbers line, ten frames and base 10 blocks.

Fun classroom activities to teach place value:

1. Claps and Clicks:
   The teacher writes a two-digit number on the board. The child has to say the number by clapping for tens and clicking for ones. For example, the number is 36. The child has to clap 3 times and clicks 6 times.
2. Roll and Collect:
   Put children in pairs. Give each pair a dice, as they roll a number they collect it with base ten blocks. When they have enough ones they exchange them for a ten. They also keep a scoreboard by writing how many they have after each turn. Set them a target number, the first one to reach it is the winner.
3. Number Bump:
   Give pair of children an empty number line or grid. Child one writes 1 then bumps it to partner to write next number 2 keep going till reach they reach 20.

Why Do Kids need to learn how to count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s?

Lots of people might be thinking why children need to learn to count in 2s, 5s and 10s. It might seem purposeless too, But really it’s not the case. It helps children with so many mathematical concepts. The better children learn these building blocks of maths, the better they will perform in calculations. For Example:

1. This helps children understand patterns thus improve their problem-solving skills.
2. It helps them to learn times tables
3. Counting in 2s helps them to understand the concept of even and odd better.
4. Gives good understanding to children for the concept of more-than.
